Atom Egoyan both directs and stars in Calendar, playing a photographer commissioned to shoot several historical Armenian churches for a calendar in the company of his wife (Egoyan’s real-life partner Arsinée Khanjian) and a local Armenian who serves as a driver/guide for the couple. Divided into 12 sequences reflecting the months of the year, the film shows the circumstances surrounding each photograph for the wall calendar — as well as the growing evidence that Khanjian’s character and the driver are beginning a relationship. Shooting on 16mm and 8mm video, Egoyan turns Calendar into a complex, highly mediated visual experience, using the formats themselves — those of a traditionally shot film and home movies, the constructed vs. the spontaneous — to speak to notions of present and past, memory and history.
