You know the old saying: “You can’t cheat an honest person.” Well, what about a deeply dishonest one? That’s the hook at the heart of Miranda July’s charming con-artist comedy, which casts Richard Jenkins and Debra Winger as lifelong scammers Robert and Theresa Dyne, and Evan Rachel Wood as Old Dolio, the daughter they’ve trained since birth to be their accomplice in their highly convoluted, consistently low-yield schemes — which, of course, has left her with an inability to trust anyone or anything. But when their latest petty scheme introduces the family to the charming, wide-open Melanie (Gina Rodriguez), Old Dolio finds herself contemplating a different, more honest life — if she can lie her way into it. A sort of cultural companion piece to Bong Joon-ho’s Parasite, Kajillionaire finds Miranda July bringing her signature unpredictability and eccentricity to bear on a tale of unexpected connections and redemptive love. And also gymnastics.
