The Righteous begins with the funeral of Frederic and Ethel’s five-year-old child, who was born through a surrogate. A few days later, they are visited by a mysterious yet sociable young man named Aaron (writer-director Mark O’Brien) who has a shocking proposal for Frederic. He refuses, but Aaron won’t leave until he gets the answer he wants. As Aaron’s stay continues, he slowly reveals his true identity — which has personal implications for Frederic and his complicated relationship with a vengeful God. O’Brien’s first feature film, shot in black and white by cinematographer Scott McClellan, is a psychological thriller about confronting your past.
