Dr. Alithea Binnie (Tilda Swinton) is a scholar of myth and legend who walks through life with reason and logic as her guides. But when she travels to a conference in Istanbul and purchases an antique bottle from a local shop, she unleashes a Djinn (Idris Elba) who offers her three wishes in exchange for his freedom. Troubled by this abrupt thrust into the fantastical ― one that she cannot explain away ― she hesitates. Alithea knows, based on her academic expertise, all the cautionary tales of wishes gone wrong. To convince her he is no trickster, the Djinn tries to ingratiate her with stories of his past encounters with other humans over the course of the past three thousand years, including one story about the greatest love of his life. Beguiled by these tales, Alithea finally makes a wish ― one that will surprise them both.
Led by two all-star actors, this drama directed by Oscar winner George Miller (Mad Max: Fury Road) is at once wildly, absurdly fantastical and rooted in our deepest desire for love.
